I live in Central Florida. Here, when our kids go back to school (yeah!), we brace ourselves for hurricane season and the hottest two months of the year. No crisp leaves, no shorter day, no open screen doors, no chili in the crock pot, no wardrobe change to J-CREW corduroy pants and knee-high wellies. It is hot, sticky, and downright swampy—even our pools are too hot to enjoy.
But here’s the upside to the unrelenting heat: I am embracing the fine art of less. Less cooking, less clutter, less make-up, less ironing, less decorating, less entertaining. And frankly, living with less feels great.
So instead of dreading the frantic succession of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, I have decided to go “zen” for the holidays, and stick with my new-found, less-is-more lifestyle.

This year, my holiday tables will be edited and simple. I will use fresh fruit or vegetables, votive candles, and greenery from the yard. I will delegate place cards to my son, knowing full well a LEGO mini-figure will be glued to each one.
My crock-pot will be in full swing with one-dish meals. I will serve lots of warm bread--with real butter. And I will wrap all of the Christmas presents in crunchy brown paper tied with red, gross-grain ribbon.
So once I’ve mastered less, here will be my super-fantastic more: My simplified table will feature the most important décor element of all: My wonderful family and friends sitting there by the glow of candlelight—smiling back at me while a cool breeze blows through an open window.
